Nufabrx “Healthwear – Clothing That Provides Wellness via Active Delivery

Dr. Michael A. DrzewinskiDr. Michael A. Drzewinski, CSO of Nufabrx.

More than 85% of adults believe that good health contributes to their definition of overall success, yet 75% of adults fail to maintain their health directions (patient compliance); whether that is applying a cream every few hours or taking their daily pills on time.

A smart-textile platform, Nufabrx®, has been developed that incorporates active ingredients into typical yarns that in turn can be converted into textile fabrics for controlled active release to the skin. When knit into garments, the finished garments consistently deliver small amounts of topical actives to the skin.  The active ingredients remain effective after multiple washings.

The Nufabrx® platform creates the next generation of smart fabric technologies, called Healthwear, which enables clothing to enhance patient compliance with medications. Such garments can continuously sooth painful muscles, repair skin or enhance athletic performance; all while simply just wearing them.

The Nufabrx® technology can be viewed as an adapted form of transdermal patch delivery. Like existing transdermal delivery patches, garments made from Nufabrx® yarns deliver actives locally onto and into the skin driven by body heat and moisture. The use of compression fibers in conjunction with the active fibers in a garment, enhances the fit and skin contact, further benefiting delivery. Unlike simple transdermal patches, Nufabrx® garments provide a continuous,  therapeutic amount of active even after repeated uses and/or launderings.

This talk will describe the origination and background behind the technology of Nufabrx® as well as demonstrate the technical performance of current and future unique benefits of wearable medicine.
